Extremely cool little British board that's hard to find in the States. Excellent tool for home recordists.
You can buy outboard mic pres that sound this musical and warm. Or you can buy this Soundtracs and get 10 of them in a very flexible, compact format with extremely decent EQs to boot. I've owned this mixer for a year or so and to the best of my knowledge everything works correctly - physically it's in excellent condition with very few signs of use. Power supply is included. Buyer pays $25 for insured UPS shipping. US bidders only please.
I go to a lot of trouble to make sure my bidders know exactly what they're getting, but due to the nature of used electronics all sales FINAL unless item is DOA. Anyway, good luck!
Hey thanks Floodstage!I bought that one at GC that we talked about earlier, but I'm sure you figured that out by now!!!I actually know the guy that had it originally, and he is a good guy that I trust. I gave him a call a few weeks ago, and he spoke highly of the board as well.I put it on lay-away, and will be picking it up in the next couple of weeks. I am currently doing some construction in the studio anyway, and would prefer for the dust to settle a bit (literally) before picking up the board.I am actually taking to an engineer friend of mine to give it a quick look-see and clean things up a bit before bringing it home as well.I will still be using mostly outboard mic pres (I have 13 total), but it is nice to have the option to use the Topaz ones. Got one few weeks ago, a 24x8, hooked it up and found out it was set up for -10. I've been told the Topaz are factory setup for -10, you need to take apart the entire board and solder some spot. Just a thought.R. Thanks Harvey.I am anxious to give the mic pres a try, especially with a bit of EQ. I have very little EQ on any of my outboard other than high-pass filters. Here is one question I have for you:One thing I was hoping to try was to go OUT from one of my outboard pres, INTO one of the monitor ins (or line ins) and then OUT of one of the direct outs to tape (computer) so that I can take advantage of the EQ in the Topaz.Does this sound like a do-able option, or do you think I will just be adding more noise to the signal chain?@ judah:Yeah, thanks for that.
I have seen a few posts around talking about that. I just ordered the manual, and will definitely be checking to make sure that the mods are done to make it a +4 system. So how do you like it other than that? Fairly large bell on all the bands, not surgical at all but very very musical.
I remember reading an interview with some famous engineer of the old days and he said that the best EQ in the world to be put in a desk would have been two bands, maybe shelving or peaking switching with very broad bell. If you can't get anything good with this kind of EQ you should change mic-instrument-preamp-setup and so forth. I completely agree with this statement and the Topaz EQ sounds like it. It's broad and musical and in my opinion you can't do surgical mess with it. It just works. Especially the low end shelving. Compared to my D&R 4000 is more alive and again musical.
The D&R is on the sterile side of it. The fixed bell is narrower and less appealing to my ears.
I haven't tried the preamps yet, just line in with same tape returns and what I heard was good. The routing is quite flexible for my needs. The metering is not there. Absolutely sub-standard. Kinda like a Mackie or a Behringer. Don't look at the meter. Again in my opinion.
You should be fine with it. Compared to Mackies and Behringers there's no comparison at all. Worked with a Ghost last year. In some ways it's similar to the Topaz but teh sound didn't impress me so much.
The Topaz it's just a really nice board. It would be super in a modular scheme, with pro power supply and a couple more features. I'd like to see a nice large Topaz, maybe a 36 or 48 channel version with modular channel strip, a couple more auxes, better intercom features, better metering (and this one would be very easy), a bigger PSU and a fancy metal frame with legs.Cheers.R.PS: If you need anything about Soundtracs, suggestions, advices, call or mail this man:He's THE Soundtracs man in the world. He knows all Soundtracs desk inside and outside.
My next board will be an IL3632 and I'm sure I'll have him help me out with this. Great post Judah, and thanks! I am expecting the manual to show up in the next week or so, and I should be getting the console in within the next 2-3 weeks. When you talk about the metering, are you talking about the meter bridge, or just the built-in group + L/R meters (and clip light)?
The unit that I have bought does have the meter bridge included, and I sure hope it is usable!!!You also mention that you have used the system with the line-ins and then through the EQ. This is one of the things that I am anxious to try as well:Outboard mic pre - Topaz line-ins -Topaz EQ - Topaz Direct Outs - Outboard A/D - ComputerI liked your comments on the EQ, and am anxious to give it a go. It will be a while however before I will be able to try it however as I am in the process of building a new control room, and will be installing the Topaz in the new room. Although I might be tempted to play with it in the old room 'just a bit'!!!I also want to have it given a complete 'look over' and cleaning by a tech friend of mine, and I'm sure he is going to want to keep it a couple of weeks depending on his workload.Construction should be complete by early January (I hope!), and then all the installation and wiring.(YUCK!).But mommie, I want it.NOW.!!! Patience my child.patience.'

It's just.I don't know how to say, you know english it's neither my first language nor my second.Quote:You also mention that you have used the system with the line-ins and then through the EQ. This is one of the things that I am anxious to try as well:Outboard mic pre - Topaz line-ins -Topaz EQ - Topaz Direct Outs - Outboard A/D - ComputerI've used the EQ on the line in with some prerecorded tracks. No test with any preamps. Lately I've wired my preamp to be normalled to the digital rig AND the analog rig. No need to pass it thru the board anymore and if I'm recording on digital I put the preamp out to the insert return of some free channel to listen too. If I'm recording analog I just monitor the tape return.Quote:I liked your comments on the EQ, and am anxious to give it a go.

Although I might be tempted to play with it in the old room 'just a bit'!!!Please remember that mics and EQ are one of the most subjective things in audio land. My father says that mics and EQ are like women. I like blondes you like brunettes. And he's not an audio engineer. Take it with a grain of salt.Quote:I also want to have it given a complete 'look over' and cleaning by a tech friend of mine, and I'm sure he is going to want to keep it a couple of weeks depending on his workload.Mine was (and still is) a bit scratchy on some pots.
I got it from an old friend who bought a TV station. The Topaz was in their main control room and was used for the past 6 or 7 years. They used the first two channels only.
Rpg vx ace rtp wine. All other faders were scratchy. It took a fast arm and some patience. A bit of self-pollution on the fader worked great. Now they are fine.
As like after self-pollution. Period.Quote:Construction should be complete by early January (I hope!), and then all the installation and wiring.(YUCK!).But mommie, I want it.NOW.!!! Patience my child.patience.' Good luck little boy.Cheers.R. I've picked up some great info on this thread. HOpe you don't mind if i chime in with some similar questions.I too am picking up a Sountracs Topaz Project 8 board. 32 tracks, modded to +4.
I'm replacing a mackie and also will be adding some outboard Pre's into my set up as well. I'm wanting to start wiring a patch bay before the board gets here in January and have some questions concerning that and my monitoring path for a digi 001 set up.Before, i've either monitored using the Aux's and using a boards pres. This way i could monitor without the latency the Digi 001 has. I'm trying to figure out the best way i can use outboard pres, and still monitor without the latency?
Some options have been normaling or half normalling between pre's and A/D converter and then patching into the board, and other have mentioned taking the out from my stand alone pre's and putting that into the line in of the soundtracs and then using the aux send. But that seems to be counterproductive since the signal from the pre has to again pass through a bunch more electronics and therefore not such a pristine path. Whats the point of spending a couple grand on some nice pre's just to run it into a board degrading the signal? So I'm thinking the half normalled patch bay might be the best idea.
However i'm having a difficult time wrapping my mind around that. Any suggestions would be great.I'm glad to read such great reviews of the Soundtracs board. It will definitly be a step up from the Mackie.
